Rebecca Hurley appeared before Her Worship Justice of the Peace Paula Nichols in provincial offence court this morning. This was her second appearance at POA. Having only just retained counsel four days ago her matter has been held over until November 28th, 2012.
On August 24 2012, City Police along with the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) executed a search warrant at 534 Case Rd location of CircleH ranch. The charges against Hurley include, causing/permitting unnecessary suffering of animals.
City Police reported a variety of animals found in neglect, suffering from malnutrition and improper care. Several of the animals were found injured. A total of five dogs were removed from the property and one had to be euthanized due to the extent of malnutrition. Several cats were also removed along with three horses. Over the past few months the Humane Society has been working towards removing all forty-four horses.
The alarming conditions at Circle H were red flagged in 2010 by local2, however little was done about the situation. Cindy Ross, manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society commented in an earlier interview this summer that they had been working on towards blowing the whistle on this situation for quite some time but need to ensure all angles were lined up before doing so.
In addition to her November appearance in POA, Hurley will also appear in federal court on November 5th and November 7th, 2012.
