Construction has started, and the foundation for Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie’s (HFHSSMA) seventh house is complete. Framing is scheduled for next week. Steve, Janice and family are gathering friends and relatives to help with work on the house. Community volunteers have been coming forward and are preparing to frame, build walls and raise the roof to prepare for work inside the house over the winter months.
Habitat is seeking enthusiastic volunteers who can spare some time to help us win the race against Old Man Winter. We welcome experienced volunteers and those wanting to learn construction skills. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) employees will be joining us for a Build Day in mid-November to help the Devlins achieve something they previously thought impossible – owning a home where they can raise their family and give back to the community in their own way. We encourage other companies to do the same.
“With each Habitat home built, the cycle of poverty takes another step toward extinction”, said President Linda Lewis. “We are eager to get this build finished so that the Devlins can move into their new home sooner rather than later.”
While the journey to home ownership may be a long one, it is worthwhile. Habitat makes applications to our home ownership program available from time to time, as we continue to build homes. Upon completion of the home in 2013 Habitat will invite new partners into the Habitat Family through a screening process in preparation for the next build.
