The Fanshawe Falcons Cross Country team bus will be a little heavier on the trip back to London, after Clint Smith collects his hardware for winning the Men's OCAA Cross Country Championships in Sault Ste. Marie this morning, and the Fanshawe Men collect their medals for winning the team championship.
Smith was the only runner to complete the 8k course at Hiawatha Highlands in under 25 minutes, with a time of 24:53.2, over thirty seconds faster than second place finisher Andrew DeGroot (St. Clair). Last year's OCAA champion Sean Sweeney (George Brown) placed third. Humber finished second in the team competition, followed by Fleming.
On the Women's side, St. Lawrence College's Richelle Moore won in 18:22.0, almost seven seconds ahead of second place finisher Stephanie Moore (Seneca). Darian Limb (Humber) edged out Samantha Braithwaite (Seneca) for third. Humber won the Women's team title, with Sault College, in only their first year of competition, taking second. Redeemer placed third.
"It was a perfect day for the Championships," said Mark Kontulainen, Athletic Director at Algoma University, who hosted the event. "We were worried that with all the rain we've had, the course might be wet, but it held up, and our volunteers did an excellent job of preparing it for today's event. We want to thank all of the competitors who made the trip here for the Championships, and congratulate them on a great season of running." Nineteen Colleges and Universities from across Ontario competed in the event.
