Beavers Pull Off Upset

The Soo Thunders hosted the Blind River Beavers Friday Night at the John Rhodes Centre in front of a crowd of 200 people.

The game started with a quick pace to it and had both teams exchanging chances at each end. The Beavers opened the scoring when Zach Pease beat Joel Horodziejczyk glove side making it 1-0 beavers. The Thunderbirds responded on the poweplay when Josh Borgen received a pass at the side of the net and tapped the puck into the yawning cage. The Thunderbirds outshot the Beavers 10-7 throughout the first frame.



The Beavers opened up the Second period by holding the Thunderbirds in their own end. Myckauly Melanson scored for the Beavers 2:10 into the period when he beat the Thunderbirds goaltender blocker side. The Beavers added another goal on the power play when Scott Marshall threw the puck into the net from a scrum out front of the net. Paul Muio also chipped in for the Beavers when he beat the Soo goaltender five-hole making it 4-1 for the Beavers. The Thunderbirds would respond when Greg Sartoretto beat Aaron Cormier to bring the Thunderbirds to within 2 goals. Just as the period was ending Derek Battagin beat the Beavers goaltender five-hole with a second left in the period.

Jeremy Soloman and Luke Dymtro set the tone for the third period when both players dropped the gloves 7 minutes into the third. The Thunderbirds eventually tie the game up 17:55 into the third period when Brandon Warmington would slide the puck by the Beavers goaltender after being sent in on the rush thanks to a pass from Derek Battagin. The third period would come to the end with the Thunderbirds outshooting the Beavers 32-30 in regulation.

The Overtime period started off with a fast pace and both teams exchanging chances at each end. Both goaltenders would stand tall until Corey McEwen would put the game away for the Beavers when he beat the Thunderbirds goalie through the five hole.



The Thunderbirds next home game is Saturday night at 7:30 when they face the Elliot Lake Bobcats at the Essar Centre.
