The Thunderbirds didn’t waste any time opening the scoring in the first period when Derek Battagin beat the Eskimo goaltender up high 2:27 into the period. The Eskimos responded quickly when Zach Innes beat Joel Horodziejczyk five hole two minutes after the Thunderbirds took the lead. Tyler Jones and Adam Ritchie also added goals to increase the thunderbird lead to 3-1 before the period was over.
The Thunderbirds dominated the second period scoring another 2 goals increasing the lead to 5-1. Darcy Casola beat the Abitibi net minder when Adam Ritchie sent him on a break from a pass. Tyler Jones chanced the Abitibi net minder from the net when he beat the Abitibi net minder on the short side.
The third period picked up right where the second left off; the Thunderbirds controlled the tempo of the game. Althought Abitibi got an early goal on a breakaway from Aaron Kerr the T-birds eventually added to their lead 7 minutes in when Darcy Casola scored his second of the night. A minute after Casola added to the lead Brandon Warmington scored on the power play increasing the lead to 7-2.
In the final minute of the third period a scrum ensued after an Abitibi player made a late hit at the Thunderbirds bench. Dan Pymaki and Tyler jones dropped the gloves for the thunderbirds where Peter Poulin-Roy and Ben Miller dropped the gloves for the Eskimo’s. Both Pymaki and Jones found themselves on top of their Abitbi counterparts before the fights were eventually broken up.
The Eskimo’s added a late goal on the power play when Corey Dubbledam scored with a second remaining in play.
The Thunderbirds outshot the Eskimo’s 38 to 30 on the way to the victory.
The Thunderbirds next home game is Friday October 12th at the Rhodes when they face the Blind River Beavers.
