Operation Christmas child is back again! Get ready to pack those boxes and make Christmas special for children around the world. On Saturday the local campaign kicked off at the Bethel Bible Chapel marking the 19th year for Operation Christmas Child in Sault Ste. Marie.
Every year 13 countries participate in packing shoeboxes with items such as hygiene products, school supplies, toys and candy. These boxes bring joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world, regardless of gender, race, religion or age. Churches, schools, business and individuals all participate in this simple, hands-on project that brings the joy of Christmas to children around the world.
Coordinators for Sault Ste. Marie and area are Marie and Elgin Long who have been involved locally for 8 years. 2012 marks their fifth year as coordinators of the local project and their goal for this year’s campaign is simply to get one more than last year. “For every one box there’s 10 new kids that need to know someone cares,” said Marie at the kick off event on Saturday. Last year Sault Ste. Marie collected 4,000 boxes.
If groups or individuals are interested in packing shoeboxes this year please contact Marie and Elgin Long at 705-253-1984 or 705-943-0529. Shoeboxes can also be packed online by visiting Pack a shoebox online!
