As the Sault Greyhounds get set to open a three game home stand this week, the team has announced that defender Colin Miller has been named team captain for the 2012-2013 Ontario Hockey League season.
Miller, who signed with the Hounds as a free agent in 2010 after playing high school hockey for the White Pines Wolverines has made the most of the opportunity in the Sault. The 19-year old has played 123 career games and tallied 11 goals and 40 assists over his first two seasons and three games this season.
The solid two-way defenseman was drafted in the 5th round, 151st overall in this past June’s NHL Entry draft by the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings. He should provide the Hounds with some excellent leadership both on and off the ice.
Miller was among a group of players who were touted as possible captaincy for this year’s squad that included fellow blue liner Ryan Sproul and hardnosed forward David Broll. Forward Nick Cousins was in the mix for the role with the team as well.
Sproul, Broll, and Darnell Nurse will serve as assistant captains for this season and if at any time Miller is unable to play, Sproul will don the Captain's "C" during games. Miller will be sidelined for four weeks with an achilles injury
In a press release from the Hounds, general manager Kyle Dubas commented, We have the 5th youngest team in the OHL this season and are carrying 13 sixteen and seventeen year olds right now. That makes it extremely important that the captain of our club provides an example that we want the younger players to follow for years to come. Early in training camp, Colin along with the rest of the leadership group did such a wonderful job of bringing the group together with the other members of the leadership group."
“Colin has showed me during the last 15 months that he comes to work every day, and represents our club very well both on and off the ice,” added Hounds head coach Mike Stapleton. “You never have to worry about Colin's effort level in the classroom, community, weight room, and on the ice. His example is one that we want all of our players to follow and that, to me, is the definition of a captain.”
Miller is the first Sault native to be named captain of the team since Tyler Kennedy did so during the 2005-2006 season. The last defenseman to be captain of the Hounds was Brock Beukeboom in 2010-2011.
The Hounds are in action this evening at 7:07pm as they take on the Saginaw Spirit in the back half of a home and home at the Essar Centre. The club hopes to build on a successful road trip after victories over the Spirit and the Sarnia Sting who come to town on Saturday.
