50 years ago the city probably never would have guessed this day would come.
But it has.
The demolition of one of Sault Ste. Marie's pioneering industries is no more.
Work began Monday at the former St. Mary's Paper to demolish some of the huge buildings with the exception of the stone heritage buildings that have been on the property for over 100 years.
Riverside Developments Inc bought the property earlier this year with several possibilities for future use of the waterfront location.
It was reported this week that Riverside Developments and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre have teamed up and are actively interested parties in a bio-energy and technology campus to be built on the eastern section of the property.
There's also an opportunity to use some of the property to expand the planned Gateway Attraction along with residential or commercial uses.
