Members represented by ETFO - Algoma District of Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and OSSTF the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation chanting "Shame on your David Orazietti" on Saturday to protest the government's legislation which they claim eliminates collective bargaining for a fair contract.
Orazietti talks about his own personal feelings about the situation since he knows where the teachers are coming from he said. Orazietti was President of the OSSTF in the district before being elected as MPP in 2003.
Orazietti discusses why the legislation was passed and the long term goals of the bill.
The bill imposed a two year wage freeze and is written to encourage a collective agreement said Orazietti.
Orazietti says Ontario teachers are the highest paid teachers in the country and most enjoy a good salary in the $90,000 . year range.
The union say however the bill is designed to take bargaining power away with a December 31 deadline to sign a new collective agreement before the Ministry of Education imposes legislation to keep teachers on the job if a new deal isn't signed.
Orazietti says the bill was needed to protect achievement made in education in the province as well as the 10,000 teachers.
