The Soo Thunderbirds started the season on a high note Friday night defeating the Blind River Beavers handily by a score of 6-1. Backstopping the team to the win was goalie Joel Horodziejczyk who made 23 saves.
Adam Ritchie opened the scoring 15:20 into the first period when he fired a shot that beat the Blind River goalie high glove side. Ritchie also added another goal 2:06 into the third period, and added an assist on the fifth goal.
Also adding to the lead was Joey Couture and Philippe Cliché, who made the game 4-0 before Tyler Brown brought the Beavers within 3 when he put the puck into an open net after it trickled by the goalkeeper. Matt Zalewsk quickly answered for the Thunderbirds restoring the 4-goal lead. Greg Sartoretto finished the scoring when he beat the Blind River goalie with 34 seconds left in the game making it 6-1.
The Thunderbirds impressed in their first outing of the season and hope to carry the momentum of this game into the game against the North Bay Trappers tomorrow afternoon.
