Sault Civics SHOCK U12 Girls Red team went undefeated and won the Championship title in the 2012 Midland Fusion Invitational Tournament this past weekend. The girls fortified the top place in a gruelling final game against Saginaw Storm Red where the team secured the winning goal with only minutes left in the overtime stretch to end the game 2-1.

Competing in a higher age division and in extreme heat and humidity, the Sault SHOCK crushed their first opponents, Bay Area Spirit in a shutout game 8-0. Shock players, Taryn Gazankas cleared 3 goals and Jaydn Deschene captured 2 goals, while team players Jenna Nanne, Nicole Pulente and Makenzi Chartrand each locked in individual goals.

The team faced stronger competition in the second game against the hometown Midland Fusion team. The girls came out aggressively with a 3-1 game win. Nicole Pulente took the lead with the first goal and teammate Taryn Gazankas followed respectively with 2 goals. In their third game of the tournament, the team landed the win against the

Saginaw Storm 1-0 to ensure their place in the final tournament game against the same opponent. Sole goal was made by Makenzi Chartrand. Goaltender Emma Hendrie achieved the 2 game shutouts in the tournament.

“The team played exceptional well in this tournament. They came with the intent to win in their final tournament of the season,” says Coach Alison Bodnar. “We expected them to do well, but the team put it all on the line against the older competition players. To win this tournament is a feather in their caps and a tribute to the hard work the girls have put into this soccer season.”

Other team players include Tiffany Davies, Sabrina Duckstein, Kara Gruyters, Jessica Howe, Julia Howe, Olivia Orazietti, Destinee Pine, Emily Roberts, Laura Rosso, Emily Scarpino and Emily Weir. Coaching staff for the team is comprised of Coach Alison Bodnar, Assistant Coach, Jessica Gillespie, Team Trainer, Ryan Mitchell and Team
Manager, Allyson Pulente.

“We look forward to the 2013 season and want to thank all our parents, sponsors and supporters,” says Coach Alison Bodnar. “Expect to see more tournament successes in the year ahead.”
