Big Brothers Association of Sault Ste Marie held a free BBQ on Wednesday, August 1st, in appreciation to the employees of Sutherland Global Services for their efforts in raising approximately $5,095 in donations for the Association over the last two years. Employees were treated to all the hot dogs and hamburgers they wished plus pop and water. Not only were employees treated to free food and drinks but also free gifts such as frisbees, water bottles, pens, and bracelets.
The executive director, Mark Szymberski, president of the Board, Mark Sageloly and other board members were on hand helping to serve up food and information on the programs and services offered by Big Brothers Association. Volunteer chef, Ron Christie, was grill master for the afternoon.
“We wanted to promote what the Association does for the local community and give thanks to the employees of Sutherland Global Services for choosing to support us in their fundraising efforts.” said Steven McCoy who benefited from Big Brothers as a young boy by being matched with a mentor. McCoy has chosen to give back to his charity by recently joining the board of directors for Big Brothers.
Sutherland Global Services has raised donations by holding dress down days throughout the work week. The employees then select by majority which charity to award their donations to. Fortunately for Big Brothers, the employees have chosen to support the Association on more than a few occasions.
Big Brothers Association has been providing mentoring services to boys in our community since 1969. They presently are providing programs and services to 45 boys in the community. They are currently 19 matches and 24 boys on the waiting to be matched up with a mentor. The boys signed up to receive services come from father-absent homes and in need of a role model to provide guidance and mentoring.
Big Brothers Association is always looking for volunteers who are willing to commit for at least a year and are ready to share friendship and activities with a young boy a couple of hours a week. It is a rewarding experience that lasts a life time.
The Association is a member of the United Way but rely on the support of businesses such as Sutherland Global Services and service groups such as Rotary North to be able to provide opportunities for boys to enjoy activities and experiences they might not otherwise have such as attending community events like Greyhound hockey games, Tree Top adventures, attend summer camps, etc.
Serving as role models, Big Brothers teach by example, the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school and of having respect for family, peers and community.
Witnessing the transformation of a child into a confident, concerned and motivated young person is a remarkable thing. Ushering them into adulthood, seeing them grow into successful, responsible member of their community and society at large can be even more satisfying. For both Big and little, the mentoring experience becomes a life changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.
