For the second year in a row the St. Paul Patriots have captured the Art Jarrett Memorial Trophy as the HSCDSB Elementary School Track and Field Champions.
On June 19th at the Jo Forman Track in Sault Ste. Marie the Patriots cruised to the aggregate title compiling 156 points. St. Mary's French Immersion finished second with 65 points and St. Patrick third with 48. Holy Family and St. Mark rounded out the top five.
St. Paul dominated the Bantam Girls division winning eight of the nine events. Emily Calibani led the way winning the 200 meters, long jump, triple jump and as part of the Patriots victorious 4-by-100 relay team. In the 200 Calibani set a new record with a time of 28.72 seconds. In Pee Wee Girls, Taryn Lamorie of St. Paul also won three events; the 100 meters, 200 meters and triple jump.
Double event winners were Ronny Zappacosta from St. Mark in Atom Boys, Alyssa Rizzo from St. Paul in Atom Girls, Talyn Tait from St. Mark in Pee Wee Girls and Nicholas Sicoly from St. Patrick and Blake Antonello from St. Paul in Bantam Boys.
This year’s meet marked the first time in HSCDSB history that teams from district schools competed. Student-athletes from schools in Espanola, Massey, Elliot Lake and Blind River made the trek east.
In Pee Wee Boys, Andrew Duff from St. Mary Catholic School in Massey made a big impression winning three events; the 100, 200 and long jump. In Pee Wee Girls, Hilary Clark from Our Lady of Lourdes French Immersion in Elliot Lake captured gold in high jump. In Atom Girls, Alexious Deschenes from St. Mary’s Blind River won the Softball Throw gold. In Bantam Boys, Brady McDonald from Sacred Heart in Espanola won the 400 meters while teammate Connor Tessier beat the field in the 800 meters.
