All sharps including needles, syringes, metal blades, and broken glass should be picked up using a proper tool such as tongs or a shovel to avoid injury. Place these items in a puncture-proof plastic or metal container with a lid for proper disposal.
Sharps are a non-collectible waste in accordance with By-law 2004-68 and should NOT be placed in residential garbage bags, recycling bins and public waste receptacles. Drop off all sharps at the City’s Household Special Waste Facility. Needles and syringes can be returned to a pharmacy or doctor’s office.
Residents who find needles and other sharp objects on public property are advised to contact the Public Works and Transportation Department at 705-759-5201 for proper disposal. For personal safety, DO NOT pick up or place sharp objects, especially needles, in public waste receptacles.
The Household Special Waste Facility located at 115 Industrial Park Crescent (turn off Great Northern Road across from Great Lakes Honda) is open April through October on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For a complete list of hazardous items that can be dropped off at the Household Special Waste Facility, go to www.cityssm.on.ca – search Household Special Waste Facility.
