Sunday marked the culmination of 4 days of collegiate curling with the medal draws of the 2012 OCAA Curling Championships hosted by Sault College. A packed house filled the Soo Curlers club, eagerly anticipating high level curling in pursuit of provincial gold.

In the mixed division, Sunday morning saw Seneca College best St. Clair College 8-3 to set up a rematch with Fanshawe College. The gold medal match was tight until Fanshawe broke the game wide open taking 5 points in the third end. Seneca could never recover as Fanshawe raced to a 9-2 victory in 6 ends successfully defending their OCAA title.

In the women’s division, Humber College remained perfect and earned a berth in the final with an 8-0 win over Fanshawe College in the first semi-final. Meanwhile in the second semi Sault College pulled off the upset, beating undefeated Seneca College 5-3. The Bronze medal game saw Fanshawe College steal three points in the final 2 ends over Seneca College to claim Bronze. The Cinderella story continued in the finals as Sault College clawed their way to a 7-5 victory in a thrilling eight end showdown with Humber. A key steal of 4 by the Sault in the second end set the tone early but the resilient Humber battled valiantly closing the gap to 1 point until the Cougars sealed the victory with a point in the eight. This marks Sault College’s first women’s title since 1973.

The Men’s division semi marked a rematch of the first game of the week, Sault College exacted their revenge on Fleming College Peterborough by a score of 9-1 sending them to the finals. The gold medal game between Sault College and undefeated Fanshawe College saw two heavyweights trade shots end after end setting up an exciting finish with the last 2 rocks of the eighth end. After 9 draws it was only fitting the championship came down to the last rocks – with the Sault stealing 1 point to secure the gold with a 7-5 victory that brought the home crowd to their feet. This marks Sault College first men’s title since 1992.
