humming birdAlthough it is only the end of August, many residents cannot help but dread the upcoming fall/winter season. In only a few short weeks the leaves will start changing, a chill will be found in the air, and many summer companions, like the frisky and eager Hummingbird will disappear.

Since I was a child, I can remember my mother putting out the bright red feeders and anxiously waiting to catch a slight glimpse at the tiny yet fiercely fast creature. With a heartbeat of approximately 1360 beats per minute and a wing speed of 40-80 flaps per second, the bird is a wonder to have present during casual backyard bbq’s and a sight for those not blinking. The whirling sound of their wings and nervous jolts at any sound, make one stop and appreciate the rare beauties a Sault Ste. Marie summer brings.

With the desire for summer to return, we become like the anxious child waiting for the sight of the miniature miracle hoping for their speedy return from warmer climates. To have these visitors nearby, you can purchase a feeder at any local department store.

I recommend Canadian Tire’s “Yule Glass Hummingbird Feeder” with sugar and water for Click Here for that
