Playing in their first regular season game in 7 years and making their return to the OCAA West Division the Sault College women’s basketball team came out with something to prove winning their opening game against Redeemer 54-47. The Cougars who were never down in the game were led by Temiskaming native Keisha Martineau who dropped 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds on the night. Sault Ste. Marie native’s Danielle White (St. Basil), Cheristy Akiwenzie (SJD) and Riley Linklator (Superior Heights) dropped 13, 11 and 6 points respectively. Laura Lehto out of Sudbury’s Lasalle played 40 minutes running the point and finished the game with 7 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. The following day the Cougars ran into last year’s National Championship hosts, the Niagara Knights and fell short of reaching their competitive goal. The ladies dropped a 95 to 45 decision, and gained valuable experience in understanding what it will take to play against the top teams in the tough OCAA West Division. In the contest Cheristy Akiwenzie led all scorers with 14 points. Keisha Martineau followed with 9 and Laura Lehto had another 7 point performance.
