Algoma University Athletics and Thunderbirds Men's Basketball Head Coach Thomas Cory are pleased to announce that Jovain Wilson has committed to Algoma University for the 2011-12 seasons. The 6'2" 175lbs Wilson is considered one of the top point guards in the country.
Wilson was a standout as a member of the Dunbarton High School Spartans in Pickering, before being named the OCAA Player of the Year in 2009-10 as a member of the Fleming Knights. Last year, Wilson redshirted as a member of the CIS National Champion Carleton Ravens, gaining valuable experience and elite coaching from renowned head coach Dave Smart. Wilson will be enrolling in the Psychology program at Algoma University this fall.
"I am looking forward to working with Coach Cory to help me improve my basketball skills and reach my potential. The most important thing for me is to use this opportunity to further my education at Algoma University."
Wilson has improved his shooting considerably over the last few seasons and will make an immediate impact through his leadership qualities and his ability to run an offense and score when asked to. "With the one year at Carleton I feel I have a better understanding of the game," he said.
Coach Cory is thrilled to have Wilson join next year's squad. "Jovain is such a tough cover for opposing defenses because he can play either guard spot, get to the basket and shoot extremely well. He is also very unselfish and will be able to distribute to his teammates and push the ball in transition" says Cory. "Having Jovain commit to our program represents a great opportunity for AU basketball."
